Your doctor will let you know the frequency at which you test your blood sugar, but caring for yourself means knowing which symptoms mean you should test your sugar. According to Healthline, if you are a type one diabetic and use insulin, you are at risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Symptoms of hypoglycemia include hunger, sweating, fatigue, and confusion. If you have these symptoms, test your blood sugar.

On the other hand, there are times when your blood sugar may be too high (hyperglycemia) despite making consistent healthy food choices. Some medications can change your blood sugar, and so can certain illnesses. Symptoms of hyperglycemia can include extreme thirst, excess hunger, frequent urination, and feeling short of breath. Test your blood sugar to confirm your symptoms and follow your doctor’s instructions to lower your blood sugar.
